It's been almost another month, but this piece is finally finished. I showed you the work in progress here and I've finally finished the last bit of hand stitching. I'd love your suggestions for a name...I'm completely at a loss for what to call it.
It's made entirely from my hand dyed and indigo dyed fabrics and threads (except for the machine thread). I love the contrast of the tight machine quilting and the seed stitches on the background piece.
If you've got an idea for a name, please leave your suggestion in the comments. Thanks!

Snow Dyeing Reveal...
As promised, here are the pieces I snow dyed the other day.
This is the result of the bin 1 dyeing.
And my favourite, the result of the bin 3 dyeing.
This crazy piece was in bin 1, but it didn't take the dye too well. It's a piece that has been used for a wipe up cloth, then had some left over setacolour paint poured over it while it was folded and crumpled, and now it's been snow dyed. It has some interesting potential in small pieces perhaps.
I also had these skeins of crochet cotton in the bins. Some nice variegation...
I think I'll do some more of this. We've certainly got enough snow!!!
If you looked at the previous post, these two were from bin 2

Too Much Snow?...Dye!
I've been meaning to try snow dying for a long time...but usually I think about it during the summer. LOL We'll, last week someone in one of the Facebook groups I belong to mentioned it, reminding me that it was on my list of things to try, and as luck would have it we're up to our eyeballs in snow this winter.
I started by Googling 'snow dying', watched a couple of videos to find out what I needed to do, and then I got started. While my muslin was soaking in the soda ash solution, I prepared a few skeins of crochet cotton and then added them to the soda ash solution too.
While that was soaking, I went outside with a big basin and filled in up with snow.
I set up three basins for the dying:
Bin 1. yellow, fushia, scarlet
Bin 2. yellow, turquoise, blue, green
Bin 3. yellow, blue, green, purple
These first images show the snow covered with the procion MX dye powder, most of which has quickly dissolved into the snow.
You're supposed to cover it and leave it for 24 hours, but you know I couldn't do that. ;o)
...So here's what bin 1 and 2 looked like about 30 minutes later (don't know why I forgot bin 3):
And then a while later...you can see the little blue baskets I put in upside down, to raise the fabric and skeins up out to the melting snow/dye.

A Bit of Inspiration...
I've really been struggling to get down to some fibre art work lately. I have lots of ideas, but I just can't seem to get started on them...procrastination and lack of drive just have me spinning my wheels and wasting time. But, a couple of days ago my friend Heather gave me this skein of thread and it seems to have been just what I needed.
I've been in the studio pulling out hand dyed fabrics and other threads and there seems to be a bit of a spark...
Pull out a stencil (that's one of Terri Stegmiller's Stepping Stone stencils)...add a bit of paint and fabric medium...
Let the fun begin!

Hopefully I'll have something interesting to show you soon!

Guess What I've Been Doing...
If you guessed 'playing with Procion MX dyes', you'd be right. I'm thrilled with the wonderful range of colours I've now got to work with in my art quilts for the next while! I'm especially excited by how well the cheese cloth takes the dye, resulting in fabulously brilliant colours. I also made a bunch of skeins of cotton threads which I also included in the dyeing process, so I'll have all of these wonderful hand-dyed threads to use to embellish my work with hand stitch.
There are so many ideas running through my imagination for what to do with these and the indigo pieces I dyed earlier in the summer...I'm off to sew!

WIP
Here are a couple of close ups of this work in progress. I had no idea how much embroidery floss you go through making French knots! I've been separating the floss into 3 strands to get a nice big knot, and I've already gone through an entire skein of floss! I'm not even half way through making all of the French knots I want on this piece, but fortunately the variegated green is one I dyed myself, so I can make more.
I'm off to get my hands green...I know I should wear gloves, but I just find them so awkward and hot! Good thing I don't have to be anywhere in the next couple of days!

Pathways
This was such a fun piece to work on. It started with an interesting piece of handmade paper that was created by wrapping some variagated fuzzy yarn around a frame. The resulting piece of paper was dimensional and had an intriguing lacy texture.
From there I created some beaded lines that I had going in and out of the various holes in the paper. Some additional lines of fabric were included and some accent buttons were added to them.
I wanted an asymmetrical piece, so I added a few more pieces of the hand dyed fabric to create the piece that hangs down from the right side of the finished piece. They were embellished with some accent buttons, coordinating threads and beads. Finally, I added some hand stitching, using hand dyed variegated threads, to create some more pathways as well as added texture using the seed stitch and a few cross stitches on the smaller squares and rectangles.Friday, August 12, 2011
Hand Dyed Fabric and Threads
This week my friends Heather, Doeteke and Ann came up to the cottage and we had some messy fun dying a bunch of cloth and threads. We ran into rain, so we ended up working inside the cover of the woodshed but all in all we had a great time and managed to have enough good weather to be able to hand our treasures out on the line to dry. We all ended up with really beautiful things to add to our stash. I can't wait to get busy playing and creating with my new fabrics!
(L-R: Doeteke, Heather, Me (Linda) and Ann mixing the powdered
dye and getting ready to play! Either that or preform surgery!
