Day Three of the Sizzix and StencilGirl Blog Hop Featuring Eileen Hull Designs

I'm excited to be part of this fun week long blog hop featuring Eileen Hull and StencilGirl!

It's always fun to be able to combine a variety of products and techniques to create and today I'm doing just that!  I'm playing with a variety of StencilGirl stencils, Sizzix Die Cuts and Eileen Hull stamp designs.  You can see the full list of products I used, along with links below.

I decided to make a little memory album for a friend who just had to return her future dog guide puppy for her formal training as a Service Dog (SSD).

I started with the easel.  I used spray ink and the Curvy Ladder stencil.  I continued to layer on paint using different stencils and stamps, keeping to various blues. My final step was to add some white circles and random rub-on letters.

I used the Dots and Dashes stencil as the initial layer on the memory book cover, layering Bubbles stencil over it. The inside covers were done with the Inside Out stencil and off prints using the Dots and Dashes again. The accent pieces were painted with a brush and then I doodled on them using permanent black and white pens.

I repurposed a piece of scrapbooking paper to create the accordian centre binding that holds the pages in the book (Sissix provides a PDF showing you how to assemble the album).
The inside pages of the album were cut from my collection of Gelli printed, marbled and painted papers.
It was fun selecting the photos to used in the book.  I had them printed at a Kodak kiosk for a great price.  This is a really freeing exercise since you can go ahead and cut up the photos, knowing that they can be worked around other features on the page. Some pages invited a bit of hand lettering to comment on the images.

And, when closed and in the easel, I think it would look really cute on a mantel or shelf!

StencilGirl and Craft Hoarders Blog Hop...

It's time for another blog hop.  Actually, this one's going on all week so if you missed the start of it, head on over to StencilGirl Talk or Craft Hoarders Anonymous Challenge Blog and you can catch up on the other stops.

Challenge #10 Spray It! Ink It! Paint It! Smear It! Emboss It!
Show us your inner mixed media diva! Use spray mists, inks, paints, modeling paste, embossing powder, pastels, chalk, and whatever messy media you can find! Let's dig into that hoard, pull out some of that "messy stuff," and use it up! There is a mess-maker hiding in all of you! Let her/him out to play!

I'm not sure how messy I got...messy stuff is my usual for art journalling, but I pulled out gesso, Dylusions Spray Inks, Pebeo Expandable Paint, acrylic paint, permanent pens in black and white and some Kroma Crackle.
Since this was about messy, I thought what better page to use than one that had Copic markers that had bled through from the other side as my starting point.  I used a knife to cover it with gesso, mostly to protect the journal page on the other side from having anything bleed through.  The extra colour in the background was good texture as far as I was concerned.
I had a little collection of some circles and a piece of a non-slip mat which I cut into a couple of diamonds and a rectangle. These became masks which I sprayed the Dylusions inks through.

Using Terri Stegmiller's Tall Birds stencil, I traced one of the birds on to each of the circles, flipping the stencil as required to get the orientation I wanted.  I did a bit of journalling within the shape of the bird before using translucent acrylic paint to paint over what I had written. The paint allows the text to still show through.

Using a fine paintbrush, I added some paint to the legs of the birds. And because I still had paint on my palette, I doodled some random circles down the left side of the page with the brush.

Black and white pen doodles were added, particularly those the circles.  I also drew in some larger words and added white highlights to those.

Using the expandable paint, I added some drops here and there, letting the wet paint activate the ink under it, before using a heat gun to activate it and let it 'puff' up.

A thick layer of Kroma crackle was added to each of the birds (it's hard to see, but it goes on clear and then dries and crackles over a couple of days).

Once the crackle was completely dried I added a bit of a metallic paint rub (using my finger) over each bird.

Blog Hop with StencilGirl and Lost Coast Designs...

I'm so glad you've come along for another fun blog hop. Can you believe we've got 15 stops on this hop!  Wow!!!

Today I'm using some StencilGirl stencils along with Lost Coast Designs rubber stamps.

It's been a while since I played with my Gelli Plate, so I decided to get it out for some fun!

I used the Joy (dictionary page) rubber stamp on the Gelli plate to get a bit of text (and texture) onto my background.

Using Pam Carriker's Journal Texture #1 stencil and Journal Texture #2 stencil I added some additional texture while also lightening up the page.

Being in that circle mood, I decided to pull out Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch's Bubbles Stencil to add another layer.

Looking at this, you might not know that I do in fact have a lot of paintbrushes...but, sometimes there's nothing like a little finger painting! I just squirt a drop of the selected colour onto my finger and make marks!  I got so carried away with this that I'm afraid I forgot to take any more pictures during the process, but you'll see them in the final shots.

Using Lost Coast's Shrubbery stamp (this comes in two different sizes), I added some background grasses to the lower part of the pages using StazOn Timber Brown.  I then loosely doodled over the design using both permanent black and white pens to add more layers and depth the that areas too.
I added the Feather Bird stamp  using black StazOn and quickly applied black embossing powder while the ink was still wet.  I like how the embossing powder gives this fun, wonky bird more depth and a nice shine!
Bird Bones stamp was added on the other page of the spread, and I used a fine black pen to extend the branch to the edge of the page, and also to 'finish' it at the end that extends into the page.
A message was added using a black Copic brush tip marker.  I added shadow to the text using a grey Copic and gave the letters some highlighting with my white Signo.  The white pen was also used to randomly trace around some of the circles that had been made with the stencils in the earlier part of the process.

A red Copic was used to make dotted lines to 'cross out' the skeletal bird....*

And there you have it...

[*no actual birds were harmed in the making of this art journal spread!]

One lucky winner will get two 9"x12" StencilGirl stencils
and a $25 gift certificate from Lost Coast Designs!

It's Hop Time Again...Today I'm Hopping With StencilGirl and Kae Pea!

I'm playing along with another talented group of artists in a blog hop featuring StencilGirl designs by Kae Pea, and Rubbermoon Stamps (You might also want to check out Rubbermoon Arts blog.).

This was a fun page to work on because I had no clear direction I wanted to go...but I knew the elements I wanted to add.

I used the GE2520 stamp of four different full moon faces, and everyone knows the moon is made of cheese, so I started with an old dictionary page, some yellow paint and this 'bubbles' stencil designed by Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch.  I applied the darker yellow paint, let that dry, then put a thin layer of the light yellow over it.  While that was still wet, I put on the stencil and used a baby wipe to remove much of the lighter yellow inside the stencil.  That left the wonderful 'Swiss cheese' effect you see.  I stamped the stamp image with black StazOn ink and quickly added black embossing powder before it could dry.

I love the texture and shine that this gave the stamped image!  I tore these moon faces out, leaving a bit of the yellow text paper around the outside.

On the remaining scraps of the painted dictionary page, I used Kae Pea's 'peacock feather' stencil and various blue and green paints to create some feathers for collaging.

With all of the various papers ready and a page that already had some overspray and stencil blotting on it, it was time to start collaging the background.

Additional paint was added, keeping to the blues, turquoises and greens that remind me of peacocks.  As you can see, I continued using the peacock feather stencil, more for texture at this point.

That step done and dry, I pulled out the 'feature' elements (those moon faces, the word "Art" I had made months ago and never used, and some additional 'peacock feathers'). Using my black and white Liquitex paint pens, a finer black Pitt pen, and a white Signo, the doodling began. Here are some close up images:

And the finished piece:

A StencilGirl Blog Hop Featuring Sue Pelletier's Designs...

I'm back today, playing along in another StencilGirl blog hop, this time featuring the designs of Sue Pelletier.  I love Sue's whimsical designs and today I'm using her Loose Woman #1 stencil.  I decided to experiment with a technique that's been on my 'to do' list for some time...using deColourant, a product created to remove pigment from fabric.

I started with a wonderfully colourful piece of my hand dyed fabric.  After laying the stencil over the fabric I sprayed the deColourant over the entire image. Following the directions on the spray bottle, I waited until it had dried completely (I'm not good at this waiting part, but it specifically says to let it air dry so I had no choice!).

Once the deColourant was completely dry, I used a steam iron and ironed the fabric, watching the magic as the colour left, leaving behind Sue's fabulous Loose Woman image!

I then used an idea I got from Laura Kemshall.  I printed the text I wanted to add to the piece, added a piece of freezer paper over top and then used a craft knife to cut the text out, leaving behind the stencil of the words.

The freezer paper stencils were ironed onto the fabric and I then used a white Shiva paintstik and my finger to apply the paint.

As you can see, I put paint in the letters and also around the outer edge of the mini word stencils so that I could highlight the shape of the word 'blocks'.

When the freezer paper was carefully removed, the text and those block shapes were left! The next step in this work in progress will be to add some machine stitch.  I hope you'll come back next Wednesday when I'll be posting about the machine doodling/stitching that I plan to add.  Until then, enjoy the rest of the blog hop (more details below) and have a fabulous weekend!
