Photo Art Meets Journalling

Bonnie's challenge this week for Photo Art Friday is 'self portrait' so I decided to combine some digital photo work with some hands on art journalling to create this spread. I started with a very low res. image that included me in a group shot that someone had posted on Facebook.  I printed it at the size I wanted to work in, and used it to trace the key shapes (head, eyes, nose, mouth, glasses).  I then used various media including Inktense pencils, Neocolor II watersoluable wax pastels, pan pastels, acrylic paint, black Pitt pen, and white Signo pen to recreate my face as well as the background and journalling on the facing page of the spread.

I took a photograph of the finished journal spread back into Photoshop Elements where I did a minor level adjustment and then place it onto Bonnie's 'inspiration' texture.

  1. This us great - I have digitally altered photos and saved the successes in an album, but I hadn't thought of adding them to journal spreads. Nice job and thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Thanks Carolyn. It's a great way to start to get into drawing faces because you can use the basic outline to guide your drawing/painting.

  2. This is a great journal layout Linda - I can tell that in another life you were a portrait painter (not), ha, ha, ha.
But fun it is and I love all the color and cheerfulness.

    1. Thanks June. I need those bright colours in these lingering winter days. I know it's now Spring, but for me it doesn't count until I see blossoms and buds on the trees!

  9. I think this is lovely. I'd thought it looked like an art journal page even before I saw the title.

  14. Great job! Hmmmmm...inspiring, too! I'm the type of artist that starts so many projects and may even take a couple of years to get one finished. I had a gorgeous photo of the Smokey mountains blown up and I attached it to a canvas panel, then covered it with clear gesso and I think it's been sitting for 2 years (right after I first started painting at 50 years old)...I planned on painting over it with acrylics to practice mixing greens! So, you inspire me...will have to pull that out! Part of my commitment this year will be to FINISH things I've started and You helped inspire me! This is also something I'm writing about in my 2nd book! Thanks much!

  16. oh what a fun and BEautimous self-portrait, Linda!! I love how you made what I would call lemonade out of lemons [some of the photos of me when I was on FB were [are] really NOT my faves, NOT by a LONG shot!!] and turned it into a wonderful profile pic and journal page!!

I also really love your quote and the words remind me that each day is another gift. always learn so much when I visit you on PAF.
